Safeguarding and Care

Ensuring that all children are safe at The Highway Primary School is given the upmost importance. Children cannot thrive academically unless they are in an environment where they feel completely safe. Good mental health and wellbeing is an integral part of having a successful education, and we work hard to ensure this for all our children. The school is committed to safeguarding and prompting the wellbeing of all our children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in safeguarding children. School staff are particularly important as they are in a position to identify concerns early and provide help for children.

We ask all adults in school to be aware of any potential dangers and follow three simple steps if they have any concerns.

Listen, Record, Report

Sometimes the smallest observation can be vital in informing the school of potential risks and removing them from a child’s life.

The school works closely with safeguarding services provided by London Borough of Bromley and well as other external agencies. We access high quality training for all adults in school, offer support for parents and carers on online safety as well as educating the children to develop their own understanding of keeping themselves safe.

Safeguarding children, within all SOLA schools, is at the heart of our ethos. We ensure that all policies embed the guidance from Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2020) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (July 2018).

With the recent publication of historic experiences of sexual assault and abuse, the government and NSPCC are working together to ensure victims are signposted to support. The dedicated NSPCC Helpline-Report Abuse in Education-launched on 1^st April 2021) and can be contacted by phone 0800 136 663, or by emailing help@nspcc.org.uk

We understand how important it is that our children are empowered to speak up about things that they don’t feel are right. Our new Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) focuses on important issues, in an age appropriate way, such as personal privacy, consent and challenging stereotypes about gender.

Jigsaw, our approach to RSHE, takes children and young people’s safety very seriously and aims to equip them to lead safe, happy and healthy lives. More details of how Jigsaw PSHE approach safeguarding and consent, in age appropriate ways, can be found here.
