RSHE
Intent
At The Highway our RSHE programme is an integral part of our whole school PSHE education provision and includes relationships, health and sex education. We have developed the curriculum in consultation with parents, children and staff, taking into account the age, needs and feelings of children. If children ask questions outside the scope of this policy, teachers will respond in an appropriate manner so they are fully informed and do not seek answers online. Children are encouraged to develop their oracy skills, ask questions and broaden their understanding of RSHE vocabulary as well as showing respect and understanding for the culturally diverse world we live in.
To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, we use Jigsaw, a whole-school mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to specific children’s needs. Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience, safeguarding and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to develop their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.
The core concepts below are promoted as a basis for RSHE throughout the school and, where relevant, across the wider curriculum, for example in RE, Science, PE and PSHE supporting the elevation of educational outcomes.
Implementation
Jigsaw offers a comprehensive Programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education as set out by the DfE guidance in September 2021. The various teaching and learning activities are engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation and the Early Years (EYFS) planning is aligned to the Early Years Framework (England).
The majority of skills are covered through the teaching of our Jigsaw lessons in RSHE. There are 6 Jigsaw Puzzles (half-termly units) designed so the whole school can study the same learning themes at the same time, each year group at its own level. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental throughout each academic year.
Being Me In My World allows children to get to know each other; understand class routines and systems; and develop the key skills of cooperation and teamwork.
Celebrating Differences allows the children to explore their own strengths and weaknesses, understanding that what makes us different, makes us special. We also explore bullying and how to tackle it.
Dreams and Goals centres around setting targets and working out how to achieve them.
Healthy Me teaches children to keep themselves healthy and offers them strategies to deal with issues around self-confidence and saying no to people.
The Relationships unit enables children to understand how friendships work and shows them how to deal with conflicts. The safe use of technology will also be taught in this unit.
Finally, the Changing Me unit explores how our bodies change as we grow and focuses on the things we are looking forward to in the following year.
Impact
Our RSHE curriculum will support children to:
- Have the confidence and language to be able to challenge their perceptions and perspectives and those of others.
- Know why it is important to learn about ourselves, others and the world in which we live.
- Feel empowered and enabled to direct their learning.
- Have discussions and reflection at appropriate moments across the school day.
- Be respectful of others, and to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse and multicultural society as they grow into a young adult.
- be confident and successful, increasing their capacity to learn and preparing them for the challenges of the modern world
- to develop their emotional intelligence and life skills.
Children review learning intentions at the end of each lesson to evaluate the knowledge and skills they have been taught. Pupil voice, lesson monitoring and subject leader monitoring allows for continuity in teaching and learning to be assessed.
