The Highway Primary School

National Year of Reading

We are excited to be taking part in the National Year of Reading 2026.
In 2026, the National Year of Reading is reconnecting reading with the things that already inspire us – from playlists and football matches to films, food and family time. It’s reading that fits how we live, not the other way around.

National Storytelling Week

In February we took part in National Storytelling Week.
National Storytelling Week is a celebration of oral storytelling, reading and writing for pleasure. At a time when young people’s writing and reading enjoyment levels are at their lowest, National Storytelling Week has never been more important.

The theme for National Storytelling Week 2026 was Soundtrack your story

During this National Storytelling Week each class had lots of fun taking part in Storytelling workshops
and other great activites to enhance their love of stories and reading.

Year 3 wrote and performed their own rhyming Rap, with plenty of attitude!

Reception continued their Fairy Tales topic by making characters and playing games associated
with some wonderful children’s stories.

World Book Day

Reading

The theme of this year's World Book Day is Reading for pleasure.

This year The Highway has created their own Masked Reader event.  The Masked Reader is a World Book Day event where staff disguise their appearance to read stories, aiming to boost reading engagement, promote literacy, and foster school community bonds. It encourages children to listen critically, guess the reader's identity, and develop a love for literature.

There are two stories different staff members read, can you guess who the masked readers are?
