The Highway Primary School

The Role of the Governing Body

School Governors are the equivalent of the Board of Directors and make decisions about the strategic direction of The Highway Primary School.

The Governing Body meets twice a term as a whole group and more regularly as members of various committees. School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. They can only act collectively, not individually. The Governors are made up of parents, members of staff and community representatives.

Parent Governors:

  • Typically have a child in the School
  • Are elected by parents of children at the School
  • Serve for a period of four years.

Parent Governors bring the views of parents to the Governing Body but they speak and act as individuals. They are not delegates or mouthpieces of parents and they do not vote for all parents in general. They have equal status and voting rights in the work of the Governing Body.

Community Governors:

  • Are appointed by the Governing Body
  • Typically have a specific skill or expertise that will prove helpful to the Governing Body
  • Serve for a period of four years.

Staff Governors:

  • Must be employed by The Highway Primary School
  • Are elected by all staff employed by The Highway Primary School
  • Serve for a period of four years.

The full Governing Body meets to discuss developments and receive feedback from the various Committees that are established to look at specific aspects of school life. At present the Governing Body has the following committees:

  • The Resources Committee, which is responsible for monitoring the school finances and budget, ensuring the school is financially accountable and overseeing the maintenance and development of the school buildings and grounds in addition to all personnel matters.
  • The Curriculum Committee which looks at the curriculum and learning and teaching across the School to ensure the school provides a high quality learning experience and delivers a broad and balanced curriculum in keeping with the school's aims, all pupil needs and legal requirements
  • The Pay & Personnel Committee which is responsible for overseeing school appointments and pay decisions
  • The Governing Body has a Discipline Panel, a Complaints and Grievances Committee and an Appeals Panel that meet as required to hear cases relating to discipline within the school, complaints, or appeals from parents.

There are specific Governors also looking at and working on:

  • Safeguarding
  • Performance Management
  • Special Needs
  • Equality
  • Links with other Governing Bodies

Adopted minutes of Governors' meetings are always available from the School Office for anyone to read. If you wish to contact the Governing Body please address your correspondence to “Chair of the Governing Body, The Highway Primary School” and pass it to the School Office who will forward it to Mr Alex Birks-Agnew.

No governor has any pecuniary or business interests which would be likely to lead to questions of bias in their relationship with the school
