The Highway Primary School

Governors

The Role of the Governing Body

School Governors are the equivalent of the Board of Directors and make decisions about the strategic direction of The Highway Primary School.

The Governing Body meets twice a term as a whole group. School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. They can only act collectively, not individually. The Governors are made up of parents, members of staff and co-opted members (people appointed by the governing body, who, in the opinion of the governing body have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school).

  • Typically have a child in the School
  • Are elected by parents of children at the School

Parent Governors bring the views of parents to the Governing Body but they speak and act as individuals. They are not delegates or mouthpieces of parents and they do not vote for all parents in general. They have equal status and voting rights in the work of the Governing Body.
